Set up Skipifi on your TV

Skipifi runs on the TV itself, through the free Skipifi TV app. Your phone is the remote. The QR code you scan comes from that TV app, so install it first.

  1. Install the free Skipifi app on your TV

On your Google TV or Android TV, open the Google Play Store, search for Skipifi and install it.

  2. Open it

The Skipifi TV app shows a QR code. The QR code only appears once the TV app is installed and open.

  3. Scan the QR code with your phone

Use the Skipifi app on your phone, on the same Wi-Fi as the TV. Your phone becomes the family-safe remote.

Don't have the phone app yet? Get it from Google Play or the App Store.

Shortcut: start from your phone

With your TV on and on the same Wi-Fi as your phone, the Skipifi phone app offers to install the TV app for you. The TV shows a pairing code, then the Skipifi listing opens in the Play Store on the TV, ready to install.

Which TVs work?

Any TV with Google TV, or with Android TV 8.0 or later (most TVs from 2018 on). That includes:

  • Sony Bravia
  • TCL
  • Philips
  • Sharp
  • Xiaomi
  • Hisense (Google TV models)
  • Toshiba (Google TV models)
  • Haier (Google TV / Android TV models)

Or any TV with one of these plugged in:

  • Chromecast with Google TV
  • Google TV Streamer
  • Nvidia Shield
  • Xiaomi TV Box and TV Stick

Quick check: does your TV have the Google Play Store, on Android TV 8.0 or later (most TVs from 2018 on)? Then Skipifi works on it. To see the version, open the TV's Settings → Device Preferences → About → Version.

Samsung, LG, Roku and Fire TV

These don't have the Google Play Store, so they can't install the Skipifi TV app:

  • Samsung
  • LG
  • Roku
  • Fire TV
  • Older Chromecasts (the ones with no remote)

Plug a Chromecast with Google TV or a Google TV Streamer into the TV's HDMI port, then install Skipifi on that.

No TV at all?

  • Android: Skipifi works on the phone or tablet itself. No TV needed.
  • iPhone: you need a Google TV (or one of the devices above) with the Skipifi TV app. The iPhone app is the remote.

Troubleshooting

I can't find the QR code

The QR code is shown by the Skipifi TV app, not by the TV. Check that the app is installed on the TV (step 1) and open (step 2).

My phone can't find the TV

  • Make sure the TV is switched on, with the Skipifi TV app open.
  • Connect the phone and the TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Guest networks, and some routers, stop devices from finding each other. Try your main network, or turn off “AP isolation” or “client isolation” in the router settings.
  • On iPhone, allow Local Network access: Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network → turn on Skipifi.
